India's North East has been the meeting place of many communities, faiths and cultures. ASSAM

The gateway to the Northeast and dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra River that has its origin in Tibet, Assam with its Capital Guwahati has several places of historical interests. There are other centres of religious and archaeological interest such as the temples of Navagraha, Basista as well as Janardhana. Kaziranga in Assam is best known for its tea and the one-horned rhinoceros, which is found in large numbers in the National Park. It is one of the most visited wildlife reserves of India and attracts tourists from all over the world.

CALCUTTA

Three hundred years ago, the city of Calcutta was born on the banks of the River Hoogly. A city of Nawabs and palaces, of Zamindars, of artists and craftsmen, it was the repository of a rich artistic tradition. The exquisitely delicate Victoria Memorial shining in the afternoon sunlight, the majestic facade of the Calcutta Museum, the gracefully sloping temple roofs of the Dakshineshwar Kalibari and the delicacy of the style of the Bengal School of painting reveal the rich diversity of the Bengali artistic heritage.

GANGTOK

The Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology and other Buddhist Studies in Gangtok is today the most prestigious of its kind in India with vast collection of rare Lepcha, Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscripts as well as statues and icons. The Orchid Sanctuary below the institute cultivates a vast range of orchids including several rare varieties. In the Deer Park, the other main attraction here, one gets a beautiful view of the hills and valleys beyond.

KALIMPONG

Set amongst the rolling foothills and deep valleys of the Himalayas, Kalimpong is relatively small town that lies at an altitude of 1250metres.The orphanage of Dr. Graham, which he started in the19th century, is still running today.
