Overview


India's North East has been the meeting place of many communities, faiths and cultures. It is a place of magical beauty and bewildering diversity with more than 166separate tribes speaking many languages and even more dialects. Southeast jungles are dense, its rivers powerful and Storms sweep across the hills and plains during the annual monsoon. But Northeast is different in the lushness of its landscape. When the Mist carpets the valley in winter, it swirls around the traveller in hills during the summer rains, creating an enchanting and romantic atmosphere.

ASSAM


The gateway to the Northeast and dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra River that has its origin in Tibet, Assam with its Capital Guwahati has several places of historical interests. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the Kamakhya Temple and the Shiva Temple. There are other centres of religious and archaeological interest such as the temples of Navagraha, Basista as well as Janardhana. Kaziranga in Assam is best known for its tea and the one-horned rhinoceros, which is found in large numbers in the National Park. It is one of the most visited wildlife reserves of India and attracts tourists from all over the world.

KALIMPONG
